Turkey came from behind at the interval (32-39) to win the match (76-72) against Lithuania. Turkey turned the match around in the third period as they changed defensive systems and accelerated the pace of the match. They went into the final quarter with a 4-point lead.
They then went on to display a lot of maturity in holding off their opponents during the final period.
For Turkey Duygu Firat confirmed her status as a player for the future, while Yasemen Saylar was regular in her shooting from the field. The match winner for Turkey was Tugce Canitez who came up big in the final period as she dominated the high post (a position just outside the paint in line with free-throw).
Giedre Paugaite had a big game for Lithuania but her 19 points were not enough. Turkey and Lithuania are in the same group during the FIBA Europe U18 European Championship Women and play each other on the opening day.
In the second match Australia ran out winners (64-47) against Romania (team picture above) but they had to work hard for it.
Elizabeth Pavel gave the Australians a lot to think about as she led the Romanian attack. The Romanians aggressive defensive disturbed the Australians at the beginning of the match as they trailed (16-20) by the end of the first period.
Australia switched to an interesting full court press, which knocked their opponents out of rhythm. Hence they regained the lead by the interval (38-35).
Pavel picked up her fifth personal foul during the third period. With her departure the Romanian chance of victory was gone. With her departure the Romanian chance of victory was gone.
For Australia Rachel Jarry took over the offensive duties of Stephanie Cumming and led the scoring with 13 points. Her teammate. Tess Madgen contributed 11 points. Gretel Tippett, played for 20 minutes but gave a full demonstration of her repertoire.
