Youth international basketball without France in Fougéres
The youth international basketball season continues in France this weekend with the 16 edition of “Tournoi International Féminin Junior de Fougères” in France.
For the first in the history of this tournament France will be absent.
Australia win tournament in 2000
Australia who are actually in preparation for the 2009 world championships are back for the first time since their victory back in 2000.
In that year not only did Australia win the tournament with victories against France, Italy and Slovenia. They also took all the honours with Shelly Hammond walking away with MVP honours and Laura Sumerton and Jessica Mahony making up the whole star team.
Dean Kinsman the current Australian head coach will have another opportunity to test his young ladies and also have a second opportunity to play Lithuania.
In the tournament in Rezé, Kinsman philosophy was on the team game with several players sharing the scoring in a balanced approach.
Stephanie Cummings was a regular in double digits throughout the tournament. Another player to watch from Australia is Gretel Tippet who was very active around the boards.
Lithuania dominated the Réze international tournament last week. They like to play quickly and also have a player who is 2m tall with Kristina Alminaite.
Other players to watch are Marina Solopova whose 3-point shooting is a delight to see and Aurime Rinkeviciute,(left) the locomotive behind the team.
Turkey have some very tall players in their roster (several players over 1m90). However they will rely on the experience of Duygu Firat (right) and the speed of Gamze Takmaz.
The players have improved over the years and with the final roster not confirmed for the FIBA Europe U18 Women European Championship will be out to impress.
This generation of players from Romania are not known to the French due to the fact this generation of players have been playing in division B.
Elizabeth Pavel, their centre, is a solid player in the paint. With Alina Chiivu (left) at her best the team will give their opponents problems. Bianca Barbu is also another remarkable player - when playing to her potential.
The matches are played at 18:30 and 20:30 each evening. 26 June: Lithuania vs Turkey, Australia vs Romania 27 June: Lithuania vs Romania, Australia vs Turkey 28 June: Turkey vs Romania, Australia vs Lithuania
