The first game and the match of the day was between Spain and the Netherlands. As the defending champions, Evaristo Pérez, the Spanish coach, wanted a different reaction from the opening day. For the first 20 minutes Spain played direct quick basketball with a lot of one-on-one plays which suited Ángela Salvadores who finished the game with 25 points. However the Dutch players fought hard with a lot of huffing and puffing and only trailed by 5 points at the interval (24-29). With the systems employed by the Spanish team during the second half of the match, high press and hustle, forced the Netherlands into errors. The Spanish team (in picture) executed the systems well and led by as many as 13 points. But as this is a preparation tournament, there were frequent changes. The Dutch team was actually on the back foot for most of the game so their coach Bart Sengers decided to change all his options in defense and offense. The result was interesting as they cut down the deficit to 2 points. However the Spanish team was not to denied and on the back of some excellent perimeter shooting hung on for the victory (61-56). Compared to the opening day both teams played much better in their second tournament game. Despite all the systems applied by the Spanish team, Salvadores was still allowed to be creative. It was nice to see that the Netherlands is not only Laura Cornelius with Lenne van der Wielen (in picture) stepping up.
