It is hard to believe that the signing of one player could bring a league to a halt, but it almost happened in the Ligue Féminine de BasketBall when TGB signed Iciss Tillis as medical cover for Isabelle Yacoubou.
Isabelle Yacoubou was on international duty for France on two occasions during the summer. She first played at the U21 World Championship in Russia and then joined the senior squad for EuroBasktet Women 2007 in Italy.
The LFB team roster contained the maximum number of non European community players based on the rules applied in France, so the announcement of them signing Tillis was a surprise.
Apparently TGB had the permission for this transaction because the president of the French Basketball Federation (FFBB) came up with a ruling stating that if a French international player is injured during the course of duty then the club has the right to temporarily replace this player with another player of any nationality and status.
To cut a long story short, the presidents of all the other clubs in the LFB did not agree on this ruling and made their intentions known that they would boycott all matches with TGB if this was allowed to stand, starting with the Open LFB. TGB was left with no option but to stand down and Tillis did not play.
Iciss Tillis has now left the club and has signed for Riga TTT, Latvia, for four months and will be playing in the EuroLeague. In the meantime Nelli Nevzorova, a 37-year-old Ukrainian veteran has been signed as temporary replacement for Yacoubou. Return from Tarbes to LFB Information Directory
