Playing basketball is what Emma Meesseman loves to do. The 40 minutes on the court with her team-mates is her time to excel.
As Meesseman does not like to talk neither about herself nor about her achievements in the games, we at womensbasketball-in-France have decided to give our readers an inside view of this young Belgium player's basketball success story.
Already in her first season playing basketball abroad Meesseman picked up the wbbif young player of the month award in November.
Since this award her club Villeneuve d'Ascq has been slowly able to climb out of the relegation zone. Presently they are seriously challenging for post-season play in the LFB challenge round.
Villeneuve d'Ascq are also, mathematically, an outside candidate for a 4th place finish that could see them challenge for the LFB championship title.
For the last six games Meesseman is currently on a LFB double-digit scoring run which started in January. In February she connected with just over 53% of the shots from the floor while averaging just over 14 points per game.
She also filled the stat sheets with rebounds, steals, assists and blocks.
But her playing basketball is little about her own statistics but more about how her team-mates make her better.
That is, without their passing or screening, it would not be possible for her to reward them with a basket. Furthermore Meesseman is a team player by also contributing her fair share of uncredited work for the better of the team in hussling and defending.
At Villeneuve d'Ascq her partnership in the paint with Olayinka Sanni is becoming the most feared in the LFB. But also Meesseman's off-the-ball understanding of Bintou Diémé has been a big factor in her club's revival.
The coach of Villeneuve d'Ascq, Frédéric Dusart, who had been an excellent youth coach, had some adjustments to make in order to accommodate his full-time university student Meesseman into his game plan.
Apart from playing basketball professionally Meesseman attends classes at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in Belgium which is approx 120 KM / 70 miles from Lille in France.
While Meesseman picks ups the womensbasketball-in france.com Young player of the award for February, there are bound to be some bigger accolades coming her way before the end of the season.
With the WNBA draft coming up in April, which she is now eligible for, Meesseman may get drafted.
With Villeneuve's successful fightback and a possible WNBA summer in mind, wbbif whishes Meesseman to further work on her skill set and hopes to catch up with her during the off-season.
