Sandrine Gruda was used to playing basketball in the sun of Martinique.
But in 2002, she left home for Toulouse in France to join the CFBB. The following year the CFBB moved to Paris.
Gruda excelled at the CFBB and joined USVO in 2005. She was in the starting line-up by her third game.
After just two seasons with USVO she moved to Russia and joined UMMC Ekaterinburg in 2007. She was also drafted into the WNBA by the Connecticut Sun in 2007.
She did not play in the WNBA in 2007 because she first represented France at the U21 FIBA World Championship Women, following this up by playing for France at EuroBasket 2007.
However in 2008, Gruda made her WNBA début and returned in 2009 to the WNBA after playing in EuroBasket 2009 for France.
Gruda won the French league and cup with USVO in 2007, a feat she repeated in Russia in 2009.
Gruda is also known as "MVP Gruda" as she has picked up so many of these awards since she left her home in Martinique.
Gruda is now 22 and is in her third season in Russia and her eighth season abroad.
