LFB clubs are finding the EuroLeague Women campaign tough after two games
The second night of action in the EuroLeague Women did not bring much joy for the clubs in the Ligue Féminine de Basketball with just one victory from four games.
Bourges Basket travelled to Croatia and came away with a victory (78-76) against Wisla can Pack (78-68).
Villeneuve d'Ascq, playing at home without Fatimatou Sacko and Martina Rejchova, did their best but fell short to Gambrinus Sika (63-67). You can read our match report by following this link.
Lattes Montpellier were unable to keep up with Beretta Famila in the final quarter and suffered their second defeat (76-81).
Union Hainaut had a bad start against Jolly JBS Sibenik and ended up losing (70-79).
EuroLeague Women blues for the clubs from the LFB
Bourges Basket did not have it all their way in Poland as Chamique Holdsclaw single handedly kept Wisla Can-Pack in the match with 22 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals.
Anna Wielebnowska was the only other player in double digits for the hosts with 12 points.
Bourges led (25-20) after the first period but went into the locker room at the interval trailing (40-41). The hosts held on their 1-point lead going into the final period (56-55).
Emméline Ndongue scored the first points of the last quarter which put Bourges in front for good.
Alessandra Santos De Oliveira and Céline Dumerc scored most of the team’s points during the closing minutes. Bourges finished the game outscoring their hosts (25-10) in the final period to win (78-66).
Santos De Oliveira led the scoring with 18 points, Ana Lelas scored 12 point. Dumerc compiled a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds and Ndongue also finished in double digits with 11 points.
Montpellier fought tooth and nail in their match against Beretta Famila. The two teams were level (15-15) after the first quarter. Montpellier edged the second period ahead (37-35) at the interval.
The lead was to change several times during the third period with the hosts from Italy going into the final period with a 1-point lead (54-53).
Both sides were still level (60-60) when Raffaella Masciadri hit the shot from down-town that decided the match with a little over six minutes to play. Laura Macchi went on to win two trips to the free-throw line.
With five minutes left to play Beretta Famila led by 7 points (67-60).
Macchi was to score 12 of the last 14 points for the hosts as they held off the challenge of Montpellier to win (81-76).
Macchi finished the game with 20 points. Masciadri had 18 while Nicole Antibes contributed 17 points for Beretta Famila.
Sheana Mosch scored 20 points for Montpellier.
Union Hainaut trailed (16-4) after only five minutes in their EuroLeague Women match against Jolly JBS Sibenik.
The hosts continued their bombardment to lead (31-19) by the end of the first period and (60-36) by the interval.
Sabrina Reghaïssia and Kathy Wambe started the UHB fight-back in the third period. With Clémence Beikes joining in the scoring they started to trouble the hosts.
UHB reduced their deficit to 10 points with just over a minute left to play but then ran out of energy and time, allowing their hosts to win (79-70).
UHB dominated the board (41-33) but managed only 4-of-23 from the land of many.
Wambe scored 16 points, dished out 5 assists and made 7 steals. But this was not enough as Kerri Gardin scored 28 points for the hosts.
Villeneuve and Montpellier are yet to win this season in the EuroLeague Women.
EuroLeague Women Group A
Besiktas Cola Turka had to wait until overtime before overcoming their guests MiZo Pecs (84-82).
Laura Harper finished with a double-double of 26 points and 19 rebounds for the winner while Anna Vadja scored 27 points and had 13 rebounds for the losers.
In the other game in this group Anke De Mondt’s three-pointer seven seconds from the end won the game for Halcon Avenida against Nadezhda (77-74).
Bourges Basket are the only team with a perfect record in this group and are currently first.
Nadezhda are the only team without a win and occupy the last position.
EuroLeague Women Group B
CSKA Moscow destroyed their hosts TTT Riga during the first period (27-9) and did not look back as they won comfortably (89-48).
Anne Wauters led the scoring for CSKA with 19 points. Katie Douglas scored 17 points and Becky Hammon dished out 7 assists.
Umana Reyer Venezia won for the second time, this game against MKB Euroleasing (70-59
match was tight for 34 minutes with Umana Reyer leading by a single point (60-59)
The last six minutes turned into a nightmare for the guest as nothing worked.
The ball refused to drop. This misfortune allowed the hosts to take the victory with Vanessa Hayden-Johnson scoring 23 points.
CSKA Moscow and Umana Reyer are the pace setters in the group with two wins each. At the other end of the table are Villeneuve d'Ascq and TTT Riga, both winless.
EuroLeague Women Group C
This group is living up to its billing so far with four teams tied. The pattern so far has been for the home side to win.
ZVVZ USK recovered from their loss in their first match of last week in France to beat Ros Casares (87-72) with Evanthia Maltsi (left) scoring 29 points.
In the last game of the second round of the EuroLeague Women UMMC Ekaterinburg secured a road victory against Lotos PKO BP Gdynia (82-71).
Deanna Nolan scored 19 points to lead the scoring for UMMC. She was joined in double digits by four other players. Sandrine Gruda just missed a double-double with 9 rebounds.
However Emilija Podrug from Lotos PKO BP did managed a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
UMMC Ekaterinburg lead the group with two wins while Lotos PKO are in last place as the only team without a victory.
EuroLeague Women Group D
Maxima Broker Kosice won for the second time, (76-68) at home to Fenerbahce. It was a close match that was only decided in the last three minutes.
Fenerbahce were leading (66-65) before Maxima Broker knocked them down with back-to-back three-pointers from Sidney Spencer. The hosts then controlled the rest of the game.
Liron Cohen, Cathrine Kraayeveld and Spencer all finished in double digits with 22, 20 and 19 points respectively for the winners.
Nicole Powell led the way for the losers with 16 points.
TEO Vilnius were the surprise in week one when they lost. In week two they beat the defending champions Spartak Moscow Region (72-64).
TEO, playing at home, dominated most of the match and led by as many as 19 points during the first half of the game. They went into the locker room with a significant advantage (43-25).
Spartak came out firing at the start of the third period to hit their guests 9-0. But then they suffered a 16-2 reversal.
TEO went into the final quarter ahead by 20 points (59-39). Yet with 35 seconds left to play they only had an advantage of 6 points. They weathered the storm and upset the defending champions.
Crystal Langhorne led the TEO attack with 23 points and 12 rebounds while Sylvia Fowles led the way for Spartak Moscow Region with 24 points and 11 rebounds.
Montpellier are the only team without a win and are bottom of the table while Maxima Broker with a perfect record lead this group. All the other teams are 1 and 1.
