The dream of the Villeneuve d'Ascq team playing in the 2014 EuroCup Women remains intact after they beat Dynamo Moscow (89-83) in the first leg of the two-game series.
Dynamo Kursk, the second Russian club in the semi-final rolled over Universitesi Istanbul (86-70).
Lenae Williams on fire during the last three minutes of the encounter was involved in all the offensive actions, knocking down 13 points from the last 15 scored while also dishing out 1 assist.
She finished the game as top scorer with 29 points and 6 assists. Emma Meesseman was also on top of her game with 15 points (7-of-10) from the floor.
Villeneuve d'Ascq's strength came from them sharing the ball. All the players that got on the court scored and six players were credited with at least 2 assists.
Dynamo Moscow, the EuroCup Women defending champions, had an up and down game. Tina Charles and Ana Dabovic with 21 and 20 points respectively were outstanding while Lindsay Whalen (5 assists) and Irina Sokolovskaya with 14 and 13 points provided veteran leadership.
The tactics of Frédéric Dusart (in picture), the head coach from Villeneuve d'Ascq, utilising his bench worked well. Lorraine Lokoka (5 points) and Laetitia Kamba (8 points) made big contributions at both ends of the court during the decisive third quarter.
The 12 points by Jo Gomis-Halilović all came from behind the arc while Elin Eldebrink added 11 points and dished out 4 assists.
In the other semi-final Dynamo Kursk were on fire during the first 20 minutes knocking down 68% of their shots to lead their hosts, Universitesi Istanbul, 47-37 at the break.
Dynamo Kursk stepped up in the third quarter to more or less end the contest with a 22-8 run. Dynamo Kursk have not lost a game in the EuroCup Women competition this season and will start the second leg at home with a 16-point lead.
Seimone Augustus and Candice Dupree who both played for Sparta&K MR Vidnoje during the last couple of seasons were the leading scorers with 19 and 16 points each. Shenise Johnson had 21 points and 13 rebounds for Universitesi Istanbul.
