The EuroCup Women curse for the top ranked team struck again with Montpellier crashing out of the tournament despite winning the second leg (58-51) against K. V. Imperial AEL. USO Mondeville was the only team beaten in the first leg that managed to make up the deficit and qualify for the quarter-final. Only three teams seeded in the top 8 have qualified for the quarter-finals: Dynamo Moscow (2), USO Mondeville (5) and Sony Athinaikos (7). The roller coaster EuroCup Women campaign of the Saarlouis Royals will continue for another round despite losing to KK Hemofarm Stada (69-84) in the return leg.
The Royals went into the contest with a 21-point lead which they lost with four minutes left to play in the third quarter.
KK Hemofarm Stada's aggregate lead did not last long as the German club side regained the aggregate lead with a pair of free-throws by Romy Bär as well as lay-ups by Tyresa Smith and Petra Manakova.
Hemofarm still led the match (66-51) going into the final quarter. They had a maximum advantage of 19 points but were unable to make up the 21-point deficit from game one.
Dynamo Moscow flirted with defeat against Ibiza Sport Island before pulling away during the closing minutes to win (70-67). Russian international Marina Kuzina led the way with 13 points and 9 rebounds.
Seat Györ showed little interest in chasing down the 29-point deficit from the first leg and were crushed at home by Dynamo Kursk (44-85).
Allison Feaster-Strong (left) with 14 points led Mann Filter Zaragoza to victory against Nadezhda Orenburg (78-72). But her side still ended up being eliminated from the competition. Sheana Mosch fired in 25 points for the Russian team.
Gran Canaria beat Romanian All Star team Municipal Targoviste (78-67) with 20 points and 11 rebounds coming from former Tarbes youth international star and Bulgarian international Zaklin Zlatanova .
However they came into this game trailing by 25 points and were never in contentions for overturning the deficit.
Lattes Montpellier will look back on this competition and ask what went wrong in Cyprus. They failed to overturn the 20-point deficit from the first game against K. V. Imperial AEL. As a consequence they are out of the competition.
Pauline Krawczyk fired in 21 points and Constance Jinks added 15 in the victory against K. V. Imperial AEL (58-51) while Chamique Holdsclaw fired in 18 points and picked up 10 rebounds for the guests.
