While the German women's national team are 40 minutes away from qualifying for EuroBasket Women 2011, another German international is already celebrating his first NBA title: Dirk Nowitzki. The Additional Qualification Round (AQR) final is a two-game aggregate score series with the winner qualifying for the European Championship preliminary round Group C with Spain, Poland and Montenegro. Germany and Hungary qualified by winning an Additional Qualification Tournament (AQT). Germany, who were playing at home in Oberhausen, had to wait until the final quarter to get past their guests Hungary (59-53). For Germany Sarah Austmann (right) and Anne Breitreiner each had 12 points while Romy Bär contributed 11 points and picked up 7 rebounds. Austmann who played for Germany at EuroBasket 2007 put her side in front for good with a three-pointer with just under eight minutes to play in the final quarter. When she took over from Breitreiner and Bär offensively, Germany increased its advantage to 11 points (59-48). However Hungary veteran stars Zsofia Fegyverneky (16 points and 6 rebounds) and Dora Horti shared the last 5 points of the game. Germany's head coach Bastian Wernthaler said after the game: "I am very happy about the win tonight. It is not so much the six points difference that make me happy but the way my team played here. Both games need to be viewed separately and therefore I expect a tough game in Sopron." Whereas Hungarian coach Norbert Székely believes that the series is still very open and the return at home in Sopron should be tough. The final match will tip off on Wednesday, 15 June in Sopron at 18:00 (CET) and broadcast by Hungarian tv channel Sport 1 TV. Return to the top of page
