Ros Casaras defended the Copa de la Reina Disappointment for Gunta Basko and Halcon Avenida
Ros Casaras won the Copa de la Reina for the third year in a row.
They defeated PDV from Ibiza in the final (65-60) with Anna Montañana leading the way with 16 points. Erika de Souza was the only other player in double digits with 10 points. She also had 9 rebounds.
Laia Palau who played in France with Bourges Basket before joining Ros Casaras scored 7 points.
For PDV Sancho Lyttle who was the tournament’s MVP finished with a double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds.
With the hosts Halcon Avenida eliminated on day one the local supporters (4500) backed PDV in the final match.
The first half of the final was a tense affair with very little scoring as both sides appeared to be overwhelmed by the occasion.
The highlight of the first ten minutes was a coast to coast by Alicia López for PDV. But it was Ros Casares that led (12-11).
PDV were more adventurous during the second period and went into the break leading (25-21).
The quality of the game improved after the break and Ros Casares drew level (28-28) through Anna Montañana.
Lopez with two three-pointers and PDV were urged on by the crowd as they opened up the biggest lead of the game (38-30).
However they were not able to maintain the momentum and suffered a 7-0 reversal before recovering to go into the final period with a 5-point lead (46-41).
Tactical changes from Ros Casares at the start of the last period left Amaya Valdemoro and Elisa Aguilar on the bench.
Laia Palau and Jana Vesela scored immediately for Ros Casares. The pendulum was beginning to swing in favour of the defending champions.
PDV then started to miss their shots and allowed the champions to score 9 uncontested points.
Montañana started to score at will as Ros Casares took control and never allowed their opponents back into the game as the won the Copa de Reina for the third time.
For Gunta Basko her first experience in the Copa de la Reina lasted only 40 minutes as Halcon Avenida fell on day 1 (80-65) to PDV.
