The heavy snow that was responsible for a delay in starting this match did not stop Armentières from getting off to an explosive start.
Mia Fisher was quickly into her stride and scored 6 points as Armentières opened with an 11-2 run.
Then Jolene Anderson picked thing up for the guests from Villeneuve d’Ascq as they outscored their hosts 9-2 to reduce their deficit (11-13).
Fisher and Anderson were having their own dual. An Anderson block was called as a foul on Fisher who was behind the three-point line.
Fisher only hit 1-of-3 from the charity stripes. However it was enough for Armentières to edge the first quarter (15-11).
Kateryana Pilyashenko-Novohatna became the offensive target for the hosts at the start of the second quarter and knocked down 5 points.
Villeneuve changed their system of play and were quickly rewarded with points from Anderson, Elodie Bertal and Lady Comfort as they came storming back to level the score (20-20).
Fisher was left open close to the baseline and fired in a trey for the hosts to go back into the lead.
Anda Nedovic then got the ball away from Emilie Gomis to set off a fast break that was concluded by Mélissa Micaletto (25-20).
Despite leading Armentières were not comfortable in defense and Villeneuve exploited this with a trey by Laurie Datchy.
The work in the paint from Comfort and Ana Cata-Chitiga resulted in free trips to the charity stripes.
The teams were level once more (28-28) after Anderson split a pair for the last score of the first half.
Armentières continued to gift points from the free-throw line at the start of the second half with a missed pair from Cora Duval.
Villeneuve’s alternating their game between the post players and the guards paid off with Comfort finding Ingrid Tanqueray in the corner.
She hit the trey with her side going ahead for the first time in the game.
With five minutes left to play in the third quarter, Villeneuve d’Ascq had stretched their advantage (39-32).
Armentières’ generosity from the free-throw line with 3-of-7 in this quarter hurt them badly with Anderson and Gomis running the game for the guests.
Villeneuve took full advantage of their hosts’ problems and opened up a 15-point lead going into the final quarter (52-37).
The hosts then found their rhythm and reduced their deficit to 7 points with five minutes left to play (47-54).
Armentières started to tire visibly and were no longer able bring the score down. Instead they fell further behind as Villeneuve finished with a flourish 17-6 to win the game (71-53).
Anderson led the Villeneuve attack with 21 points and 10 rebounds. She also went 4-of-9 from beyond the arc and dished out 4 assists.
Datchy fired in 15 points while Bertal compiled a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds.
